If you must drive, keep an emergency kit in your car with blankets, a shovel, flashlight, jumper cables, sand or kitty litter for traction, and a bright cloth for signaling. Keep your gas tank full and check fluids.

Dress in warm layers, including hats, gloves, and waterproof boots. Take it slow when shoveling snow—cold air puts stress on the body. Take breaks and push snow instead of lifting it. Use rock salt or pet-safe ice melt on sidewalks before snow falls.
