Faith, Culture, and Solidarity Highlight 2026 Unity Iftar at Philippine Center, New York

New York. The Kalayaan Hall at the Philippine Center became a symbol of interfaith and international unity as the Philippine Consulate General in New York City hosted the 2026 Unity Iftar. Organized in collaboration with the Kinding Sindaw Heritage Foundation, the event brought together Filipinos and guests from diverse nationalities and religions to celebrate the rich traditions of the Southern Philippines and the holy month of Ramadan.

Consul General Senen Mangalile emphasized the Consulate’s dedication to fostering inclusivity, highlighting that the narratives of Mindanao of the Maranao, Maguindanao, Tausug, Yakans, and Samals are integral parts of the broader Filipino story. He further acknowledged the Philippine government’s recognition of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as national holidays, reflecting the nation's solidarity with its Muslim communities. The evening resonated with powerful messages of social justice and heartfelt reflections on faith.

Esteemed community leader Loida Nicolas Lewis delivered an impactful Unity Response, sharing her poignant experiences witnessing the discrimination faced by Muslim classmates during her time at the University of the Philippines. Her speech underscored the persistent systemic challenges many endure, closing with an impassioned plea for genuine unity and efforts to dismantle prejudice within the global Filipino community.

The observance culminated in the Adhan and Maghrib prayer, led by Hamza Razuman, followed by a communal iftar meal. This gathering was supported by organizations such as Muslim Filipinos in the USA, Muslim Women of Queens, La Salle Ice Cream, and Ascend ABA. The event concluded with a heartfelt message from Potri Ranka Manis Queano Nur of Kinding Sindaw, who expressed gratitude to all attendees for cultivating a space where ancestral traditions harmonize with modern identity. Drawing a diverse audience that included notable figures like Dr. Calvin Sun, an emergency room physician and candidate for Manhattan Borough President in 2025, the event exemplified its dedication to fostering inter-ethnic and inter-religious solidarity.
