NYREADERS.COM - Snow begins to melt and streams fill with runoff. The weather heats up, and the days become longer. That means winter is coming to an end and let’s welcome spring!

Springtime brings magnificent natural grandeur to parks, forests, rivers, and coastlines. The fresh spring air is ideal for getting outside, seeing the flowers bloom and feeling the breeze from the ocean. Spring is usually regarded as a slower season, with fewer travelers and lower accommodation and flight prices. So, what could be better than spending time in a tourist destination without having to cope with a large crowd?

Thinking about spending spring break on a half maritime adventure, half sightseeing exploration, while seeing a historical place? Here is our first pick for the most idyllic places to spend your 2024 spring break in a coastal area: Portland in Maine

Maine is in the northeastern United States, bordering Canada. It is the easternmost state in the USA. Not only does nature bloom along the seaside, also warm-weather merchants begin to open their doors.

Let’s come to the harbor in Portland and enjoy the historical place from the water. At the 1.5 hour cruise you will be learning about its history from your knowledgeable crew. Maine's oldest lighthouse commissioned by the founder of the country George Washington can be clearly spotted from the water.

You'll also spot Civil War-era forts, historic lighthouses, boats traffic swaying in the breeze. The trip will be perfect for all ages, you’ll get to know the city and its maritime heritage, all while taking in its most scenic side. Other views to enjoy are the Casco Bay Islands, Fort Gorges, and more.

Let’s book your seat here.

Right after getting off from the cruise, it is better to not miss to take a leisurely walk at the East Promenade of Fort Allen Park. It is an urban park and historic monument located on Casco Bay, just 5 minutes away from the harbor.

Fort Allen Park is more than just a park. It’s a combination between historical and recreational spots. Picnic tables are also ready to be filled by visitors.

The site had originally been a Revolutionary Way Fort erected in 1775 and restored to protect Portland during the War of 1812. It now houses a Civil War memorial, a Historic Cannon recovered from the USS Maine, which sank in the Cuban harbor of Havana on February 15, 1898, and a reconstructed ship mast from the USS Portland. It spans 9 acres and borders the Eastern Promenade to the south.
