Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the United States had an incentive-based plasma donation program in place. The United States is one of four countries that compensates plasma donors. The other countries are Germany, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The Niskanen Center reports that the United States supplies around 70% of the world's plasma needs.
Plasma, which makes up 55% of human blood, is known as "the gift of life," since it is used to treat medical emergencies such as trauma, shock, burns, and therapies for rare chronic medical conditions.
“We need a lot of donations. It takes up to 1200 donations to make enough medicine to treat one patient for one year,” said an officer from Grifols Biomat USA to the 12 News’ Niala Charles.
The FDA allows you to donate plasma up to twice in a seven-day period, with at least one day between each donation. You cannot donate plasma more than once within a two-day period.
Although most people do not experience any side effects from donating plasma, it may result in common but modest adverse effects such as dehydration and exhaustion. In addition, you may feel dizzy or lightheaded. Although not common, fainting can occur. It is uncommon, but more serious infections or reactions can develop and are treatable.
The most well-known plasma donation centers or laboratories in the United States are CSL Plasma, Biolife, and Grifols.
Each center compensates at a different rate. I myself did some observations about Biolife. To donate plasma, interested donors must first download an app, enter personal information, and set up an appointment. At Biolife, a compensation fee per visit can be around $30-$40.
The more you visit, the more compensation you would get. Some Plasma centers offer you an enticing incentive plus loyalty rewards. At Biolife, a new donor can be offered $400 in four times donation. They are promoted in a variety of ways. For certain seasons e.g Holiday season, Biolife can offer donors $500 in four donations.
